BEANTOWN

Nicknames a-plenty
Describe our Boston faire,
Beginning with the Puritans
So righteous and rare.

Beantown, oh Beantown
The history of your name
Tells a story of the heritage
From whence you sprang.

They set the beans a-cooking
After Saturday night’s bath;
Musn’t cook on the Sabbath—
To stay on the righteous path.

Baked beans became the standard
Among our earliest folk.
And to this day the name has stuck.
No, ‘t isn’t a joke.

Now the “beans” are candy sweet
In collectible pots of clay.
“Boston Baked Beans” adorns each pot
For which the tourist pays.

Beantown, oh Beantown
The history of your name
Tells a story of the heritage
From whence you sprang.
